The prisons are relatively closed institutions with restrictions put on one’s liberty and freedom. Prisons in our country, though christened as Correctional Homes and reform being the stated objective of punishment, do not present an encouraging picture. There is much to be done in the area of prisons to ameliorate the condition of prisoners. Condition is made worse also because prisons as a component of the criminal justice system is by far a neglected area when it comes to development and reforms in criminal justice system. The morale of prison staff also who are in the direct interface with the prisoners is low. All these factors combined together increase the chances for human rights violations inside the prisons. Therefore, the Foundation has been organising training-cum-workshops for the prison staff.

The training workshops are facilitated by inviting upright officials who have set higher standards of professional ethics, honesty and integrity, and rule of law to their office. As facilitators, highly experienced social workers who have been working on issues related to prisons since are also invited. We are in its first phase; the prisons located within the jurisdiction of Mumbai and Thane are being covered. This would be followed by other districts in Maharashtra in subsequent phases.

Justice consists not in being neutral between right and wrong, but in finding out the right and upholding it, wherever found, against the wrong. ---- Theodore Roosevelt (1858 - 1919), 1916 (quoted in the Theodore Roosevelt Centennial CD-ROM)
