In the past year, we have focused our energies on the issues related to Child Rights and Child Welfare. Mumbai, the so-called city of dreams has also the dubious distinction of having in the country one of the largest forces of children forced to live on the street where the integrated whole of such children are in constant threat of abuse-physical, mental, psychological and sexual. Mumbai is both a transit and destination place for trafficked children. These children are trafficked from poor regions of the country either to be re-trafficked to other places or countries to work in hazardous industries or are pushed into the exploitative and ignominious world of flesh ‘trade’. The recent spate of consumerism after the advent of the policy of globalisation, liberalisation and privatisation has only added to the already deteriorating situation of child rights. We have had several meetings and training programmes with the functionaries of the Child Welfare Committees in various districts of Maharashtra. Through the above programmes, the Foundation has been lobbying for an effective and efficient implementation of the provisions enshrined under the newly enacted Juvenile Justice (Care & Protection) Act, 2000 for the protection of the rights of children and their welfare. The significance of holding such meetings and training programmes lies in the fact that the Child Welfare Committee plays a pivotal role in the implementation of the above statute. In this endeavour of child welfare, the Foundation is being supported by Department of Women and Child Development, Govt. of Maharashtra and the UNICEF.
